What is the difference between the fruit and gifts of the Spirit?
The fruit of the Spirit is character: nine qualities, from love to self-control, that the Spirit grows in every believer over time (Galatians 5:22-23). The gifts of the Spirit are abilities, like teaching, wisdom or healing, that the Spirit gives to different people for serving others (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Every Christian is meant to bear all the fruit; no one has every gift.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control."Galatians 5:22-23, WEB
"Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit… distributing to each one separately as he desires."1 Corinthians 12:4, 11, WEB
Notice the grammar. Paul writes "fruit", singular, with nine qualities, like one plant bearing all of them. He writes "gifts", plural, handed out "to each one separately." Then, right between his two chapters on gifts, he puts 1 Corinthians 13: "If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge… but don't have love, I am nothing" (1 Corinthians 13:2, WEB).
Gifts are what the Spirit does through you; fruit is who the Spirit makes you.
Fruit of the Spirit vs gifts of the Spirit, side by side
| Fruit | Gifts | |
|---|---|---|
| Main passage | Galatians 5:22-23 | 1 Corinthians 12; Romans 12:6-8; Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Peter 4:10 |
| Who has it | Every believer, all nine | "To each one" a different mix |
| How it shows | Over time, in ordinary moments | In service, often in a specific role |
| Purpose | Becoming like Christ | "For the profit of all" (1 Cor 12:7) |
| Can it be faked? | Not for long | Paul warns gifts without love are "nothing" |
| Jesus' test | "By their fruits you will know them" (Matthew 7:16) | Not named as the test |
How the gifts work today, and whether some have ceased, is debated between Christian traditions. This page doesn't take a side on that; the passages above are quoted word for word.
You can't choose your gifts, but you can practice the fruit today.
Practicing the fruit, not just knowing the list
Because the fruit grows in ordinary moments, we built Ninefruit, our free iPhone app, around those moments. Each day brings one realistic situation from home, school, work or online. You choose what you'd honestly do, then see the verse behind it and one small thing to try.

One design decision: Ninefruit calls itself "a practice and learning tool, not a test of your faith." There's no score, and nothing wilts when you miss a day.

Try it: one fruit this week
If the picker above sent you toward the fruit side more than once, here's a simple week to try. No app needed.
- Choose one fruit from Galatians 5:22-23, the one you'd least like a friend to grade you on.
- Name one place it keeps failing: the drive home, the group chat, the kitchen at 6 p.m.
- Do one small thing there each day, like one slow breath before answering, or one kind message.
- Write one line each night. Did it, partly, or not yet. All three count.
Who should pick something else: if you're looking for a spiritual gifts inventory or a theology of the charismatic gifts, Ninefruit won't help; it only covers the fruit. It's also not counselling, and it's iPhone only.
Gifts get discovered; fruit gets practiced.
