What is a good Proverbs reading plan for men?

The simplest Proverbs reading plan for men is one chapter a day for 31 days, matching the chapter to the date. Proverbs has exactly 31 chapters, so any 31-day month finishes the book. Each chapter takes about two minutes to read, so the plan fits before work, with coffee, or in the truck.

We counted it. In the World English Bible, Proverbs runs 915 verses and 14,535 words. A 2019 review of 190 reading studies by Marc Brysbaert put the average adult silent reading rate at 238 words a minute (British Psychological Society Research Digest, June 2019). That makes the whole book about an hour of reading, spread across a month. The shortest chapter, Proverbs 9, is about 1.2 minutes. The longest, Proverbs 30, is about 2.6.

Much of the book is written as a father talking to a son. The phrase "my son" appears 23 times in the WEB text of Proverbs, and Proverbs 4 opens: "Listen, sons, to a father’s instruction. Pay attention and know understanding;" That is part of why men keep coming back to it.

Sections as the book labels them; minutes from WEB word counts at 238 wpm.
SectionWhat it isMin
1–9A father's long talks to his son about wisdom, women, work and company16.1
10:1–22:16"The proverbs of Solomon": short, two-line sayings25.4
22:17–24:34"The words of the wise": slightly longer sayings5.4
25–29Solomon's proverbs copied by "the men of Hezekiah"9.7
30The words of Agur2.6
31King Lemuel's mother's teaching, then the worthy woman1.9

A Proverbs plan for men works because it is short enough to keep and specific enough to act on the same day.

How to read Proverbs in 3 steps

  1. Read the date

Read the chapter that matches today's date. Missed a day? Read today's anyway. You're not behind.

  2. Circle one line

Proverbs is too dense to hold all at once. Pick the one verse that hit hardest. We put a suggestion in each day above.

  3. Do one thing

Turn the line into one action before dark. Proverbs is about how a man lives on an ordinary day.

Read one chapter, keep one verse, do one thing: that's the whole method.

Where FORGED fits in

This page gives you the Proverbs plan. FORGED gives you the routine around it. FORGED is a 90-day Bible plan and devotional for men: each day takes about ten minutes, with one practical challenge, one Scripture passage explained in plain English, and quiet time for prayer with a 3, 5 or 10-minute timer that dims the screen to a single ember.

FORGED Scripture screen with a World English Bible passage and a plain-English explanation
Scripture in plain words, verse quoted word for word
FORGED prayer timer offering 3, 5 or 10 minutes of silence
Silence with God: a 3, 5 or 10-minute timer

One design decision we stand by: FORGED keeps its commentary visually separate from the Bible text, so you always know which words are Scripture and which are ours. Use this checklist for December, then let FORGED carry the habit into the new year.

Proverbs on paper for 31 days, FORGED on your phone for the 90 after.

A December morning, sketched

This is an illustration, not a testimonial. It's 6:10 on a Tuesday. December 8. Coffee's on. A man opens to Proverbs 8, reads for two and a half minutes, and stops on verse 13: "The fear of the LORD is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth."

He ticks the box. He circles "the perverse mouth." At 10:40, in a meeting that goes sideways, he notices the sarcastic line forming and keeps it. That's the plan working. Not a feeling, a kept sentence.

Can I do this plan with other men?
