What does the Bible say about self-control?

The Bible calls self-control part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23): something God grows in a person, not a trait you simply grit out. It is the ability to rule your own spirit, so that appetite, anger, words and screens don't rule you. Scripture pairs it with training, watchfulness and grace.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.Galatians 5:22–23, WEB

The Greek word in Galatians 5:23 is egkrateia, which Strong's Concordance (G1466) defines as self-control or mastery over one's desires; the noun appears four times in the New Testament: Acts 24:25, Galatians 5:23 and twice in 2 Peter 1:6. It is the last fruit on Paul's list, and the one most groups feel least able to claim.

Self-control in the Bible is grown and trained, not just tried harder.

Saturday, 11:40 p.m.

An illustration of the study's idea, not a testimonial.

A small group spends an evening on Proverbs 25:28, the city without walls. Everyone nods. On Saturday night, one of them is three videos past where she meant to stop, phone glowing, alarm set for six.

What changes it isn't the memory of the verse. It's the practice from week four: say "not yet", set a ten-minute wait, put the phone across the room. Sometimes the urge is still there after ten minutes. Often it isn't.

A verse names the wall; a practice helps build it.

How the study works in 3 steps

  1. Read one passage together. Out loud, twice. Every passage is in the leader plan below, word for word from the WEB.
  2. Talk through three questions. What it says, what it means, where it hits this week.
  3. Take one practice home. Small and specific. Report back next week, without scores.

Self-control study questions

What is the best Bible verse on self-control?

Galatians 5:22–23 is the anchor, because it names self-control as fruit of the Spirit. Proverbs 25:28 gives the clearest picture: a person without self-control is like a city with broken walls.

Is self-control the same as willpower?

Not in Paul's terms. Galatians 5 calls it fruit, grown by the Spirit, while 1 Corinthians 9 and 2 Peter 1 also call for training and effort. Most traditions hold both together; they differ on emphasis.

How long should a self-control Bible study be?

Four weekly sessions of 30 to 60 minutes is enough to read the main passages and try a practice between meetings. Groups that want more can repeat week four with a new struggle.

Can I use this study with kids?

Yes. Choose "Family at home" in the builder for shorter questions and a practice that works at the dinner table. Read the passages aloud and let kids answer first.

Which Bible character showed self-control?

Joseph is the classic example: in Genesis 39 he refuses Potiphar's wife day after day and, when cornered, runs, leaving his garment behind. Week four of this study uses his story.
