What Bible verse helps with anxiety at night?

Psalm 4:8 is the verse most people reach for at night: “In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.” For racing worry, Philippians 4:6–7 tells you what to do with it, and 1 Peter 5:7 says where to put it. Pick one, not ten, and repeat it slowly in the dark.

The rest of this page matches verses to the specific thing keeping you awake, then walks you through a 90-second reset you can do right now with the screen dimmed.

This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your clinician if sleepless nights keep coming back.

One verse, repeated slowly, beats ten verses skimmed.

Who this is not for

A verse can sit beside real help; it should not replace it.

The 90-second night reset

Three steps: breathe, read, put it down. The breathing follows the NHS breathing exercise for stress: in through the nose, out through the mouth, gently counting to five each way. The NHS suggests doing it for at least five minutes; 90 seconds is a start, and you can keep breathing after the verse.

Night anxiety questions

What is a good Bible verse to read when you can't sleep?

Psalm 4:8 is the classic: "In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety." It was written as an evening prayer, and it is short enough to repeat in the dark.

Is it a sin to have anxiety at night?

No. The psalms are full of people who could not sleep and said so to God, and Jesus himself was in anguish the night before he died. Philippians 4:6 invites you to bring the worry to God, not to pretend it is not there.

Should I read my phone in bed if I can't sleep?

Keep it brief. The NHS advises against using devices right before bed. If you use a verse app, open it once, read the verse, then put the phone face down and repeat the verse from memory.

When should I see a doctor about not sleeping?

The NHS says to see a GP if changing your sleeping habits has not helped, if you have had trouble sleeping for months, or if it is making daily life hard to cope with. If you are in crisis in the US, call or text 988.

Bring the worry to God; bring long sleeplessness to a doctor.

How Lampstep works in 3 steps

  1. Tap SOS

Choose anxious, angry, tempted, can't sleep or grieving. It opens from the app, a widget or Siri, and it is always free.
  2. Breathe, then read

Breathe with gentle haptics, then get one verse, one next step and one short prayer.
  3. Prep tomorrow

If tomorrow is the worry, name the hard moment (a review, a hard talk, a doctor visit) in Tomorrow Prep and get a verse and a step 15 minutes before it. One is free; unlimited comes with Lampstep Plus.

A design decision we care about: Lampstep has no account, no AI and no servers, so what you type at 3 a.m. never leaves your phone. An honest limitation: it is still a phone app, and the NHS advises against devices before bed. Use it once, then put it face down.

SOS, a verse, a step: then the phone goes face down.

Make it a habit with Lampstep

SOS, today's Fork, the evening check-in and Proverb of the Day are free forever. Lampstep Plus is an optional in-app purchase.
