Honest limits
- A verse is not a fix for a broken workplace. If you're being harassed, underpaid or asked to do something unsafe, that's a matter for HR, your union or the Department of Labor, not just prayer.
- Chronic stress can become burn-out. The World Health Organization's ICD-11 entry (WHO, May 2019) describes burn-out as resulting “from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,” marked by exhaustion, mental distance from the job and reduced professional efficacy. If that's you, talk to a doctor.
- In crisis? In the US, call or text 988. Lampstep shows 988 first when you open SOS for a crisis moment.

How common is work stress?
Very. In the American Psychological Association's 2025 Work in America survey of 2,017 employed US adults, run by The Harris Poll from March 26 to April 4, 2025, 54% said job insecurity had a significant impact on their work stress (APA, May 2025). Among workers worried about losing their job, 42% said work stress made it hard to sleep.
If work keeps you up at night, you're far from alone.
A Tuesday, in practice
It's 4:52 p.m. A message from your manager: “Can we talk tomorrow at 9?” No context. Your stomach drops, and you start drafting worst cases on the drive home.
Here's the Lampstep way through it. Breathe for twenty seconds. Read one verse: Matthew 6:34. Take one step: write down the three things you'd want to say at 9 a.m., then close the laptop. Pray one sentence. Then go cook dinner. That's the whole move, and it takes about 90 seconds.
The next morning, Tomorrow Prep can send the right verse and a step 15 minutes before the meeting.

Work stress FAQ
What does the Bible say about stress at work?
The Bible treats work as good but not ultimate. Colossians 3:23 says to work heartily as for the Lord. Psalm 127:2 warns against working from early to late, and Matthew 11:28 invites the heavily burdened to come to Jesus for rest.
Is it wrong for a Christian to feel stressed at work?
No. Stress is a normal response to pressure. Philippians 4:6 doesn't shame anxiety; it tells you what to do with it: bring your requests to God with thanksgiving. Stress that lasts for weeks is worth talking to a doctor about.
What is a good verse before a hard meeting?
Proverbs 15:1 if the meeting might get heated, Philippians 4:6–7 if you're anxious, and James 1:5 if you need to decide something. Read it in the parking lot, not during the meeting.
Which translation are these verses from?
All verses on this page are quoted word for word from the World English Bible, a public-domain translation. Lampstep uses the same translation.
